Rolex Explorer I

As the final Rolex Explorer to be housed in a 36mm case prior to the size’s reintroduction in 2021 via the ref. 124270, the ref. 114270 here was the last in a long line of watches that essentially saw very little change over the course of almost five decades. At its core, the watch features a classic Explorer style with some technical upgrades compared to the previous generation ref. 14270. Among these, the 2001-introduced model featured an upgraded Rolex movement in the caliber 3130 as well as solid end-links for a heavier, modern wrist feel, together providing for a technically advanced watch that ultimately didn’t deviate aesthetically too much from previous established styles.

The 114270 was eventually phased out nine years after its introduction in 2010 with the arrival of the 39mm ref. 214270, and while it was short lived in the brand’s catalogue, it nonetheless remains as a notable 2000s advancement in the collection’s history, with all the fixings for a future classic.
